Hello, remember me?

Yes, I have been MIA for a few weeks.  There has been so much going on in my life lately (some good and some bad) that I have put myself on the “back burner”.  I guess with myself on the back burner writing on the blog wasn’t necessarily forgotten about… but as I wrote about two weeks ago:  My whole life seems to be in a rut right now. I am so busy that I barely even know what day it is. I will fill you in later on while my life feels like it is on hold. I plan on writing here “tomorrow” but then before I know it 4 days have gone by”.  Even as I was typing this initially I wrote last week, but when I pulled it up sure enough it was two weeks ago.  Crap where has the time gone??

So what has been going on with me?

The good:

My entire family (brother, sister-in-law, nieces, my dad, me, my boyfriend, our son, my ex husband, and our daughter) went on vacation a few weeks ago.  We had a really nice time and it was great to get away from the real world and just relax.    Not the best timing but needed (see below)

The bad:

I am in the middle of a Payroll and HR system conversion at work and I am now working 50-60 hrs per week.  Go –live is Sept 10th so it is almost over.

My son has been sick (nothing serious just a bad summer cold) so he is not sleeping well.

My daughter is back from all of here camps and travels for the summer and yes cheerleading season has started.  This means driving to multiple practices per day.

The Ugly:

As you may or may not know my Sister-in-law was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer last year…  at the ripe old age of 37.  Well, things are not going well for her (hence the schedule of a family trip at not the best time for everyone).  Despite aggressive chemo, radiation, and a mastectomy; her cancer has continue to grow and spread.  The cancer in her lungs has grown considerably and new lesions have appeared, most pronounced is on her pancreas.  Needless to say this as well has taken much of my time and focus away from me and onto her and her family.  With 13-year old twins at home she has more than she can handle right now and unfortunately that will not change anytime soon.

I guess right now I feel so “behind the eight ball” if you will that I can’t keep up with anything.  I am constantly feeling that I have so much to do that I can’t do anything well.  Do you ever feel that way?  I hate that feeling.  So what do I push to the back burner?  Me.  Some would argue that isn’t the best choice and some may even say it is an excuse to not eat right or work out.  I would say that “some” may be right.   I wish I was more like Diva and had more dedication to myself, honestly I just don’t.

I can say that I still haven’t gained any weight back and physically I still feel good about myself.

Oh…  I need to run out now because over the weekend I got a flat tire…  I couldn’t get it fixed until today because I had jury duty…  I need my car back because tomorrow I need to drive to the beach to batten down the hatches on the beach house before the hurricane.  What’s that expression; When it rains it pours?

Please… advice on how to get myself mentally and physically back on track!  I can’t be the only one that has times like this in my life and I am hoping some others will share and give some tips to get through it.

TrueLifeDiva Thursday  Finding the motivation when there is none

The other day BuffyWood asked me how do I stay motivated.  I didn’t really have an immediate answer.  And then my cousin I mentioned in last weeks post called me to update me on her progress.  She’s lost 6 of the 12 lbs she gained and feeling great.  We started discussing techniques, tricks, shortcuts, methods, etc.  She mentioned a phenomenon we discussed here on the blog a few months ago….Sabotage.  Yes, now that she is shedding the pounds, everyone wants to feed her.  Baked goods, Sees candy, and her mom suddenly wants to cook  old-fashioned southern fried meals “for the grand kids”.  Most commonly heard comment?  “What’s one day/meal gonna hurt?”  You all know what I’m talking about ;-).  It’s hard enough to motivate yourself and then people want to wreck your whole program!  Sabotage is universal and its real.

I am finding that contributing for this blog is a major motivating factor for me these days.  I am constantly reading articles to discuss.  I subscribe to at least half a dozen fitness/diet/healthy lifestyle newsletters so I can stay abreast of the latest findings.  I follow several fitness enthusiasts on Twitter.  I am finding myself talking about fitness the way I used to talk about The Real Housewives.  And for those of you who’ve known me for a minute, you know that’s a lot :-D.

After getting off the phone with my cousin (who lurks regularly) I contemplated Buffy’s question and came to this conclusion…

I stay motivated by:

  • Vanity, when you look good you feel good. 😉
  • Networking.  Connecting with like-minded people gives you a feeling of community.
  • Exploring new classes.  Trying something new and liking it is a great feeling.
  • Dressing for the occasion.  Wearing cute workout gear always makes me want to take a class and show it off ;-).
  • Better health.  Being able to do things my peers struggle to do fitness wise makes me feel young and vibrant.
  • Better sleep.  I always sleep good on the days I had a challenging workout.  And I’ve suffered from insomnia in the past.  Sleep is very precious to me.
  • Catching the men folk giving me a double take when I pass by.  I hear “The men all pause” by Klymaxx playing in my head whenever this happens. LOL!
  • Developing healthy habits.  I tend to be a little O.C.D at times and committing to a healthier lifestyle has led me to replace some of my more negative habits with positive ones.
  • Being able to help others who are on the same journey.  I get messages on Twitter all the time from peeps telling me I inspire them.  If my rambling posts help someone get to their goals, then its worth opening up about my struggles as well.

What are your motivation tricks when you find yourself low on inspiration?  Want to add to my list or give me your own?  Let us  know how you “get ‘er done!”   Peace and blessings, TrueLifeDiva

TrueLifeDiva ThursdayAdventures in plateau busting…pt1

A few weeks ago I received a phone call in the middle of the day.  It was a cousin of mine who I am very close to.  She sounded upset and I thought for sure she was going to tell me some bad news.  She stuttered a bit and then blurted out, “I’ve gained 12 lbs and I don’t know what to do!” Whew!  Is that all?  Okay, I’ve got your back :-).  She told me how the weight had slowly crept on and despite doing what has always worked in the past, the weight was not budging.  We had a nice long talk and I gave her some suggestions.  I followed up with daily texts of encouraging words, links to fitness articles, and the gift of a beautiful journal to log her diet/fitness daily.  Renewed hope inspired her to speak about her wanting to get back on track and she found out a few co-workers were in the same boat unbeknownst to her.  She reported back to me that others in her group were “forcing” her to take Zumba and Yoga classes with them :-).  The weight is starting to come off and I couldn’t be more proud of her and her efforts.

Of course this got me to thinking about my own situation.  I had started to get into a rut my damn self.  As I was researching articles for my cousin I realized I could take the same advice as well.  Around this same time, GoldenGirl mention I.F or fasting.  I googled it and from what I read determined that it wasn’t compatible with my lifestyle.  But this did remind me that I should/could be tweeking my diet.  So I began an experiment.  According to most online calculators, I need to consume 2200-2300 calories a day to maintain my current weight.  I usually take in 2000 calories which explains why I am losing at a snails pace.  In the past I was finding my body had become acclimated to dropping down to 1200 calories so doing this only worked for a week or two.  I decided to rotate my intake and hopefully shock my system into losing weight.

Experiment details:

  • Two weeks on a 1200-1500 calorie a day budget
  • Two weeks rest at 2000 calories a day
  • Try to burn approximately 1000 calories a day exercising
  • Increase intensity level during workouts, increase # of crunches/sit ups performed each workout session
  • Add Jillian Michaels  30 Day Shred to daily routine. I fit this into my day by doing a section while my dinner cooks.  Works most days 😉
  • Began following a group on Twitter called #plankaday.  The two leaders tweet fitness articles, make bad puns, and call you out if you do not report in daily that you have performed at least one plank.  Periodically they do a 12 hr plank session called #plankanhour.  I’m not up to that level yet, but I committed to doing an Am and Pm plank each day.  Plan to extend plank time (60 seconds) and add side planks as I get stronger.

My plan is to weigh myself at the end of six weeks.  I am on week four but decided to fill you guys in so you can chime in with suggestions.  I have peeked at the scale but will wait until the experiment is over to determine if my efforts produced any REAL weight loss.

Have you experimented with fasting or calorie restriction.  Have you ever done any extreme exercise regimen?  What has worked for you in the past when you hit a plateau?  Any suggestions for future input?  Tell me what you think 🙂                                                                 Peace and blessings, TrueLifeDiva
